Today I want to talk about something that I think is very important in a wedding. We can say that choosing the wedding planner, the venue, the decoration, the flowers, the food, the music, etc. will be decisive in making that day very special for you. But one thing you should think about is that it is very important how you are going to remember that day for the rest of your life. When choosing a photographer not everyone with a camera can be a wedding photographer. You need a lot of creativity, experience, skill… And, of course, they must have a style that you like. That’s why I want to explain the different styles of wedding photography.

The first thing to do is to look at different wedding photographers on the internet or Instagram to compare. Maybe you already have an idea of what you want and the style. You’ll find one whose photos you can relate to and whose work conveys all that to you for the photos of your big day, you’ll want to feel just like that.

It is also important to get to know him/her and to have a good mutual energy. It will be important that you get on well together as there will be many hours both before and on the day of the celebration. Once you have decided you have found your photographer and you have fallen in love with him/her and his/her style.

-Editorial photography: This is a style of photography that you can see in many fashion magazines. It is as if you want your wedding to be told with images rich in creativity. The photographer will take into account things like light and angles. Also that each photograph tells something in an impactful way, that it tells a story.

This type of style requires a lot of preparation on the part of the photographer to know what to do in what place and at what moment. Of course it is essential to have a lot of communication with the couple and to know exactly what they want. For that there will be a previous study of your style, the dress, the place, the light, spaces, scenery.

-Traditional photography: Among the different styles of wedding photography, it is perhaps the one that is least in demand nowadays. Mostly because it belongs to previous years where static and posed photography was more common. It is focused on portraits of the couple and the family. It has a more classical approach within what can be styles. Even so, within everything that happens during the wedding day, there are moments when it is used.

Especially the parents want to have the typical group photo of the two families separately, then together. Also with the godparents, bridesmaids etc… Everything is organised in advance so that there are these poses and the time and place is determined. There are photographers specialised in capturing for example the couple’s photos following this traditional photography. You are put in a certain way holding hands, looking towards a place, without moving and there you have it, a classic and traditional pose.

-Photojournalism: This is undoubtedly one of the most current and popular styles of wedding photography. As its name suggests, it is like a modern and dynamic reportage. Using a documentary approach the photographer will be in the moments that occur throughout the wedding to capture the story of the day. Everything will be more or less in motion, he will not intervene at all asking you to do this or that.

It is a very natural and spontaneous style of photography. Each photo will have emotion and will perfectly reflect the feelings of you and your guests. At the end you will have the story of what happened told in authentic photographs. When you look at them they will have a lot of meaning and even if years go by they will make you relive that day with emotion.

-Editorial photojournalism : We can also find a style that mixes pure photojournalism with editorial style. The landscape, the moments, the faces and expressions, the relationships between people, the details, the anticipations and the times are taken into account.

In this case the two styles are mixed and the stage is organised. For the most part the style is dynamic with no breaks or interventions. The editorial part is usually in the bride’s preparations or in a couple’s photo. Then the photographer prepares in advance how these photos will reflect the style and aesthetics of an editorial magazine.

-Artistic photography: With this style the photographs at a certain moment of your wedding become art when some control is applied to them. They do not only represent something that is happening but an idea that the photographer artistically creates in a predetermined way with his or her camera.

The photographer turns your photos from a simple “coverage of what is happening” to an intentionally elaborated art. As previously mentioned it can be mixed with other styles and applied at any given moment.

The different styles of wedding photography are there to best reflect your big day. The most important thing is that you enjoy and celebrate without worrying about anything. Once you have hired your professionals, trust them and forget about everything. Focus on having a good time and you will never forget your wedding.
